I spent my first year living in Thailand assisting a group of Thai artists paint a mural in a Buddhist temple. Wat Srisupan in Chiang Mai was where i first immersed myself in Thai art, culture, food and language. The design and conception of the mural was done by Chaiporn Pongpak. The mural depicts the 12 animal years and associated stupas as well as walls devoted to depictions of Chiang Mai stupas and teachings from Abhidhamma. The images shown are of the areas of the mural on which i worked.

That Luang trade fair mural

That Luang trade fair mural

Mural painting decorating a pavillion at the That Luang trade fair in Vientiane,Laos. The pavillion was promoting the north eastern province of Huaphan. I spent a month up in Huaphan drawing and painting as part of the research for the mural. The design for the mural is based on textile patterns of various hill tribes that live in the area, notably Hmong,Tai Dum and Tai Daeng. The mural also features a swirling almond tree in blossom another feature of the province.
